A severe drought has led to power cuts in Ecuador, which relies on hydroelectrical sources for much of its power, according to the BBC.
On a Monday, power companies in Ecuador announced power cuts lasting between two and five hours to ensure less electricity was used. The energy ministry said Ecuador's power system had been affected by "several unprecedented situations", including a drought, increased temperatures, and minimum water levels.
We are deeply sorry to hear that Ecuador is experiencing an energy crisis. Our hearts go out to all those affected by this challenging situation. Know that Team AGG stands with you in solidarity and support during this difficult time. Stay strong, Ecuador!
To help our friends in Ecuador, AGG has provided some tips here on how to stay safe during a power outage.
Stay Informed: Pay close attention to the latest news about power outages from local authorities and follow any instructions they provide.
Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit with essentials such as flashlights, batteries, candles, matches, battery-powered radios and first aid supplies.
Food Safety: Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to keep temperatures low and allow food to last longer. Consume perishable foods first and use food from the fridge before moving on to food from the freezer.
Water Supply: It's important to have a supply of clean water stored. If water supply is cut off, conserve water by using it only for drinking and sanitation purposes.
Unplug Appliances: Power surges when the power is restored can cause damage to appliances, unplug major appliances and electronics after the power is off. Leave a light on to know when the power will be restored.
Stay Cool: Stay hydrated in hot weather, keep windows open for ventilation, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
Carbon Monoxide Dangers: If using a generator, propane stove, or charcoal grill for cooking or electricity, make sure they are used outside and keep the surrounding area well ventilated to prevent carbon monoxide from building up indoors.
Stay Connected: Keep in touch with neighbors or relatives to check on each other's health and share resources as needed.
Prepare for Medical Needs: If you or anyone in your home relies on medical equipment that requires electricity, make sure you have a plan in place for an alternative source of power or relocation if necessary.
Be Cautious: Be especially careful with candles to prevent fire hazards and never run a generator indoors because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
During a power outage, remember that safety comes first and stay calm while waiting for power to be restored. Stay safe!
